EL PÁJARO DE ORO

-El pájaro de oro se ha llevado otra de mis manzanas -dijo el Rey-. Tenemos que capturarlo.
-Lo intentaré, señor -respondió el joven-. Pero sólo soy el hijo del jardinero, no uno de tus soldados.
Al día siguiente cuando el pájaro intentó robar otra manzana, el hijo del jardinero le disparó una flecha y le arrancó una pluma dorada.
-¡Una pluma no es bastante! -gritó el rey-. Quiero capturar vivo a ese pájaro ladrón.
El hijo del jardinero recorrió todos los bosques del país en busca del pájaro, pero no lo encontró.
-Sube encima de mí -le dijo un zorro muy simpático que encontró- y te llevaré hasta el pájaro que buscas.
-¿Ves aquel castillo? -le dijo el zorro al muchacho-. Delante de su puerta encontrará un grupo de guardias durmiendo. No les hagas caso y entra. En el centro del aposento encontrarás al pájaro de oro. Para llevártelo, utiliza una jaula de madera.
A Gabriel, que así se llamaba el joven, no le costó mucho encontrar el aposento indicado por el zorro. Pero, olvidando el consejo de su amigo, metió al pájaro en una jaula de oro.
-¡Socorro! ¡Favor! -gritó el pájaro-. ¡Quieren robarme!
Los guardias atraparon al muchacho y le condujeron a presencia del rey del castillo.
-Te perdonaré la vida -dijo el Rey -si me traes el caballo dorado que puede correr tan aprisa como el viento.
-Aquí esta el caballo de oro -dijo el zorro-, pero ponle la silla de montar vieja si quieres evitar que relinche y llame la atención a los soldados.
-¡Que tontería! -objetó Gabriel-. Un caballo así merece una silla de oro.
El caballo se puso a relinchar, y los guardias apresaron a Gabriel y le condujeron de nuevo a presencia del rey del castillo.
-Te personaré de nuevo la vida -dijo el rey -si me traes a la princesa Lina para casarme con ella.
-¿Por qué no me hiciste caso? -le reprochó el zorro-. Voy a aconsejarte por última vez. Al sonar las doce, la princesa Lina vendrá a bañarse los pies en este riachuelo. Si le besas la mano, consentirá en ser llevada a presencia del Rey.
Yo no quiero casarme con el rey -dijo la princesa-. Llévame contigo.
-Sea como tú quieres -dijo Gabriel-.
Monta en la grupa del caballo de oro y te llevaré lejos. También nos llevamos el pájaro, pues es lo primero que vine a buscar.
Gabriel y la princesa se alejaron rápidamente del castillo, llevándose en su jaula dorada el pájaro de oro.
-¡Qué alegría tendrá el rey cuando vea que he capturado al pájaro de oro y que ya no podrá robarle ninguna manzana!
Los jóvenes se casaron, y como eran muy agradecidos, invitaron al simpático zorro al banquete de bodas.
THE GOLDEN BIRD

"The golden bird has taken another of my apples," said the King. We have to capture it.
"I will try, sir," replied the young man. But I'm just the gardener's son, not one of your soldiers.
The next day when the bird tried to steal another apple, the gardener's son shot an arrow at it and plucked out a golden feather.
-A pen is not enough! cried the king. I want to capture that robber bird alive.
The gardener's son went through all the woods in the country looking for the bird, but he did not find it.
-Climb on top of me -said a very nice fox that he found- and I'll take you to the bird you're looking for.
Do you see that castle? said the fox to the boy. In front of his door you will find a group of guards sleeping. Ignore them and go inside. In the center of the room you will find the golden bird. To take it away, use a wooden cage.
Gabriel, who was the name of the young man, did not have a hard time finding the room indicated by the fox. But, forgetting the advice of his friend, he put the bird in a golden cage.
-Help! Favour! cried the bird. They want to rob me!
The guards caught the boy and led him to the presence of the king of the castle.
"I will spare your life," said the King, "if you bring me the golden horse that can run as fast as the wind."
-Here is the golden horse -said the fox-, but put the old saddle on it if you want to prevent it from neighing and attracting the attention of the soldiers.
-What nonsense! Gabriel objected. Such a horse deserves a golden saddle.
The horse began to neigh, and the guards seized Gabriel and led him back into the presence of the king of the castle.
"I will bring you life again," said the king, "if you bring me Princess Lina to marry her."
-Why didn't you listen to me? the fox reproached him. I will advise you for the last time. At twelve o'clock, Princess Lina will come to bathe her feet in this stream. If you kiss her hand, she will consent to be brought before the King.
I don't want to marry the king,' said the princess. Take me with you.
"Be as you wish," said Gabriel.
Mount on the rump of the golden horse and I will carry you away. We also took the bird, because it is the first thing I came to look for.
Gabriel and the princess hurried away from the castle, taking the golden bird with them in its gilded cage.
-How happy the king will be when he sees that I have captured the golden bird and that he will no longer be able to steal any apples from it!
The young people got married, and since they were very grateful, they invited the friendly fox to the wedding banquet.
